Thomas

Thomas was a fair young boy
Fairest of his brothers three
When he came a courtin'
I never thought he'd marry me

Thomas was a handsome boy
He treated me respectfully
But I could not hope to love sweet Thomas
Or feel the air beneath my feet

For I'd loved a man when I was younger
With wild eyes and windswept hair
He took me up the highest mountains
But the county knows he left me there

I never thought I'd have his baby
Never thought we'd make a home
I never thought I'd love sweet Thomas
With his clear blue eyes and his hair all combed

But yes, sweet Thomas, Yes I will
You can take my heart I'll take your hand
The woman who walked down that mountain
Will never be a girl again

I loved a man when I was younger
With wild eyes and windswept hair
He took me up the highest mountains
But the county knows he left me there

We're working hard to keep our land
Our children now they number four
And I have grown to love sweet Thomas
Like I've never loved before

I loved a man when I was younger
A common coward of a man
Now I've no time for climbing mountains
But I like the view from where I stand
